With their mutual love of good books, good music, quality television (e.g. “The Bachelor”), sports, the outdoors, travel, Duke basketball, and being goofy, it was clear early on that this was something special and potentially something life-changing.
Julia and Jeff knew of each other when at Duke and shared a number of mutual friends. Jeff graduated in 2004, moving to Chicago – the second best city in the world – behind only Indianapolis (according to the groom). Julia graduated a year later, trying Washington D.C. for a bit before feeling a pull from the West Coast and relocating to San Francisco.
They didn’t see each other again until a fateful pub crawl on November 1st, 2008 in honor of Jon Drillings’ birthday. Jeff had flown out to San Francisco to surprise Jon for the pub crawl (Julia would soon learn that he has a knack for great birthday surprises). Julia and Jeff had a blast together that night, and Julia remembers the butterflies she felt when he grabbed her hand and guided her to the dance floor at the last stop on the crawl, Maggie McGarry’s. He went back to Chicago the next day but it took him less than 24 hours to get in touch with Julia.
The two corresponded with a few messages that winter, and Julia was delighted to be invited to Tyler Courtney and Shannon Murphy’s wedding in Atlanta in May 2009, and Jeff just so happened to be a groomsman. Julia and her mom knew a new dress was in order for this wedding!
After a wonderful wedding weekend celebrating Tyler and Shannon and taking over the St. Regis, Julia and Jeff were dating. It felt right, real, and effortless, and the long-distance thing didn’t scare either of them. The two delighted in meeting each other’s families, taking in Cubs games at Wrigley, exploring San Francisco, hitting up concerts, traveling to Kauai, and falling in love.
Jeff moved to San Francisco to join Julia in August 2011, and they made their first home together. After a year of growing even closer as roommates, Jeff proposed to Julia on Nantucket in July 2012 in typical Jeff fashion – heartfelt, romantic, and extraordinarily special – and both Julia and Jeff’s families were there to join in the joy and celebration.
Under the guise of a photo project, Jeff managed to capture the proposal on camera – check out the video here or below.
A big thank you to our families and all of our friends for helping us get here. We are so blessed to have found each other and to have you in our lives.
